I propose that the forum be modified such that folks have the ability to individually blacklist other forum members. This would have the effect that the blacklist-er would not see any posts or messages from the blacklist-ed. This would not affect anyone else's view of posts or messages (if Aaron blacklists Bob, then Carl can still see Bob's posts). No notification would be sent to the blacklist-ed; this is purely a filter for the viewer/blacklist-er. This is similar to Tunngle's blacklisting feature, as well as MMOs' 'ignore' feature.

This gives users the option to come to the forum and not see posts that are unwanted. Having seen this work in Tunngle, I feel this is a civilized manner in which to promote respect amongst forum members.

i think its a bad idea makes debating and getting to any constructive ideas or opinions across coz u only see what u whant to see,This can result in thinking ur right when ur wrong i strongly reccomend agants this coz being able to hear 2 sides is the best thing to understand a problem, issue or what ever and even if some1 is wrong or disrespects u or what ever at some point that dosent mean he/she will for ever be wrong or repetitive.Btw  just coz u feel like its better its not. U should use ur logical side of the brain rather than ur emotional side makes solving problems mutch easier  heh i bet u dont even know what definition of civilized, civilized manner is. as for promoting respect ignoring is totaly usles. if u whant to promote respect u listen to them!  B)

I wouldn't blacklist anyone, but regarding the posts of some members I can understand that some people would like to ;). OTP, the problem is not that you disagree with someone who brought up a different argument, the problem is about trolls who write in every idea thread nothing more than "this idea is totally crap and stfu".

While Boggz Loves you, Yandonman, he feels this would be a slippery slope :)

I think a better way is the "thumbs up or down" method i have seen on other forums.  That way if someone makes a truly obnoxious post after a few people give it thumbs down it will get buried.  If someone really wants to see what was so bad that it was buried....which would probably be anyone  :D  they can click it open.

I have to agree. While sometimes people can greatly annoy you, blacklisting may prevent any sort of meaningful discussion.

Most forums do have an ignore list, which can be handy and really help those members who are sick of being annoyed by a particular member, but the staff do deal with those when notified, it's part of their job.

Both views have it's pros and cons in regards to a ignore list or not. I do not know much about SMF software, having only used it once as a back-up forum, but I if it was possible and the staff thought it was a good idea to use I'd think we'd already have that option as members.

i am not a big fan of like/don't like systems. while like/don't like options work indeed very well for forum trolls it often gets abused to not only judge the quality of a forum post, but also if it matches ones opinion or not. similar to that are reputation systems. reputation has to be earned by your actions and not by a point system 99% of forum users don't even participate in. such systems would work well if all users would use it for what they were intended, but you cannot really expect that. Personally i ignore reputation systems in other forums and with like/don't like systems i catch myself using it to rate a post if it matches my opinion or not, which this system is not meant for.

that are at least my experiences with such systems, and still, while i don't actually support the idea to ignore other users, i can understand why someone might want that. it is not a perfect system either. i participate in another forum (a tech forum) where there was one user constantly trying to provoke. despite i put him on ignore, i still was curious what he wrote when i saw the notice that there is a hidden post :) especially when other users then began quoting parts of his message

i just checked, the next forum we want to deploy with the updated site has a block functionality build in. so everyone can decide for themselves to use that feature or not when available.

i am sure not everyone is that ignorant when replying to your posts. :)
if you see a user being that counterproductive, just report the post to a moderator.

For once i agree many who claim to understand respect are actually too ignorant to truly understand the word and think that ignoring someone is the only way to be mature when in fact its actually immature and hypocritical in it self as that is disrespectful.

Altho i notice some people are so emotional they do not like when someone disagrees with their opinion and claim that the person disagreeing is a troll. If you cant take any criticism over an opinion you shouldn't be a part of an online community/forum.
