I wish I lived in Germany!!!!!
Want to say something off topic? Something that has nothing to do with Trek? Post it here.

Listen to a german, me!
Rammstein is a music pressed in a rock. It will not change, it will not fade, it will not improve or lose. And the lyrics are somewhat between that a child will do with a background of a master brain. They tell simple stories with a deep sea behind it. But the music isnt special. They use the same methods they used 10 years ago...
Blind Guardian does a whole other thing, so you cant really compare them to Rammstein, BUT, they do art. Blind Guardian is one of my favorite bands when it comes to metal, and the reason behind it is not the "how do they rock" but the "how does it feel". You wont understand the music if you dont let yourself free and imagine it while the sound is hitting your brain. ;-)
I have seen around 300 different metal-bands, and there are only few, that go into my mind when I think of "best".
There are: Children of Bodom, Suidakra, Amon Amarth. Blind Guardian, Karaklysm and the very best band of the world: Equilibrium.
You will miss something, if you don't know them. And yes, they are german too.
Greetings from germany,
Sheva

Equilibrium - "Blut im auge" did have a decent intro. I've always been more rock/symphonic, perhaps gothic oriented than pure metal or deathmetal.
What's your opinion on bands such as Within Temptation and Linkin Park

Within Temptation is for girls.. After one song you have the same feeling for nearly all others... too little difference. Like Slayer in soft. Nightwish is better.
And Linkin Park is okay I think - but depends on the mood. But Linkin Park is Rock, not Metal. ;D
No offense, hard rock rocks too, but the way of production/creation is another one.

Listened to a couple of songs from Nightwish and they're not bad. No match for the vocals of Sharon den adel though, that voice still sends shivers across my spine.

I know rock =/= metal. Metal is a sub division. Rock i like, metal not so much.

About Germany being overrated.. well.. thats a topic where u can have a long talk with an Austrian like me..
but Blind Guardian is great... music is a topic that usually leads to heated discussions... which doesnt make sense. you like it or you don't.. thats nothing to quarrel about.

Indeed, not everyone can have my good taste in music

Haha, judging a country because of some music only very few Germans know themselves .
If Star trek was the only thing I knew about the USA perhaps I'd like to live there, too . Sadly I'm reading newspapers and get a whole different image .
I don't know much from Blind Guardian, only three songs of which one is really great, though. Rammstein is great, especially the album "Liebe ist für alle da". However, there are other great German bands(which are often much more famous in Germany than Rammstein). Since I'm nearly listening to German music only I could throw in a long list here, but I won't, music discussions are often quite pointless.

Its not about a good/bad music discussion, but all about finding out a little more about whats going on in the world.
If you find someone with experience in hardrock/metal you might ask him for more info about what he knews. So when someone out of the USA is asking a german about metal, I think the discussion is quite valid, because we have LOTS of metal bands here.
But I agree, you cant judge a country by its "music" or whatever "single" reason comes to mind.
For me for example, I would be afraid to live in the USA, because everyone can run through the streets with weapons and if you want to work/live there, you have to make sure that you dont fly into anything like a patent (M$ patented the shut down of a computer and such... silly things) or you dont let a hot coffee fall over the arm of your seatmate so that he will charge you for 1.000.000 $.
Thats simply not possible in germany so I can work/live in relative "peace" here, BUT that doesnt mean I like germany more. Here are also a bunch of things I dont like - so the best answer is: Go in there, look around and then decide yourself.

Oh yes, we all carry guns in the U.S. I have an UZI strapped behind my back for safety at all times, in fact. That is, when I don't have a Katana strapped to the back of my black, Matrix style trench coat.
Don't worry, the U.S. is not at all like what you think it is. I know a Korean Foreign exchange student who was afraid to come to the U.S. for just the same reasons: He thought we were all "packing heat". All I can say is don't trust everything you read, and don't immediately believe in every rumor you hear.
For example, if I believed everything I heard about Germany, my impression would be that you all dress like this:
http://www.theoktoberfest.com/HTML/trachten/index.html
Or this.

If only.

Hehe, I think you have a point. The bavarian culture is the only one that goes out of germany in the sight of other people. Bavaria is one out of 16 states here and the "Trachten" are only worn one time a year, I think. Dont know exactly myself, because its a VERY special culture here... think of it like disney land for germans *g*
Well, I think everything depends on the people around you and the you will get the right impression - its the same everywhere. Hmm... Well, maybe I give it a second thought.
What about working in the USA? I've heard, you need a greencard to work there... but what about when you are searched? For example, I'm an angineer - I've read, that the NASA was searching for people with knowledge of psychoacoustics - I have that knowledge. Now, there is (I've seen it there) a paragraph where stand "You have to have the US citizenship". So... no way to work in the US for me? I dont know the details, thats why I'm asking.
In germany, you can come in and work at instant... for example. So I wonder how it works.
