It was never covered in star trek but since most federation starships are named after somewhat famous navy ships it was probably named after the HMS Sabre.

While were on this the sabre is massively under powered in fleet ops, the sabre was made as a small but powerful ship to fight the borg like the defiant was (small , fast ,powerful) from what i remember it had the same set of phasers as the galaxy class type 10 phasers, so the damage it does in FO is quite in accurate.

Even in star trek armada 2 the description of it is accurate, it was made for heavy combat.

we will stick with the current spelling (Saber) as thats the one used on Memory Alpha (Saber class - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki)

What's funny is I just read the interview on that memory alpha article, and the designer calls it "sabre" :P

Well since when does the federation name a ship after a weapon.

In most federation games i have come across it is named Sabre, it is only when reviewed by an American or written by an American does the name suddenly change to Saber.

They could have named it after the film about the sword?

Uh true my mistake , however is that not about the sword of king arthur, what is famous about a saber sword that they would name a vessel after it?

I agree  that the both  are correct spellings. Just like the word colour (British spelling)  and  color (American spelling) describe the  exact same thing .

Once they made the excalibur, they could have thought, "Hey, let's make another 'sword' name, because a sword is a weapon and starships have weapons on them!"  Conversations happen like that ll the time.

I bet it's sabre, after the HMS sabre, since many starfleet vessels are named after naval ships and since the designer calls it a sabre.  It's probably "more correct", but saber was popularized and so that's what we see most often.

All of this is chicken and the egg thinking, since the HMS sabre herself is named after the sword.

i think the sabre/er is an underated and underused ship, it looks nice when done well, its a nice design as well.

Worthy of assimilation.

I use the hell out of it in early game myself.  Backed up by a canaveral and maybe a warp in ship or two, they are a force to be rekoned with.  I only use them in mid-late game vs Klingons, as they are the only thing that seems to be able to keep up, long as theyre using the hyperimpulse.

And where are the 2 Torpedo Lpuncher that are mentioned on Memory Alpha?

Armament: Four type-10 phaser emitters, two photon torpedo launchers That would be a little nasty ship.

1 launcher at the front tip of the middle section, between the Shuttlebays. 1 launcher at the back. Those are the most likely locations.

It's probably either the strongest or second most powerful destroyer in the game currently - definitely underated and underused by people here, but if it is spammed early game, it is definitely very painful for the Romulans, Klingon, and Dominion. :D

lol i meant in star trek, i should have been more clear
in FO its quite good, torpedos as in tears of the prophets would be OP. unless the devs are gonna give the akira 700 quantum torp launchers and fighters as well. in which case, give the sovereign a BFG 9000!!!
torps for mining ships maybe?
nah.
