Before season 5, the ready-room actually served a purpose other than being part of a social instance of the game:
You could start already completed missions from there. Now you do that in the campaign-overview whereever you want. ^^

There are plans to give the ship's interiors more gameplay functions, we just have to wait!

They've been saying that for a while, and they actually removed some gameplay functions in the meantime.

Im just glad they toned down the size of the ship interiors to a more realistic scale. I mean the old doors were big enough to fit a shuttle through and the bridges you could host a game of football in. Gotta sayu STO has come along way. Really need more endgame content though.

They actually already did some. If you look in your interior, you will be able to talk to some officers that will give you tones of special assignments.

Compared to most MMOs, STO's missions have a lot more depth and thought to them. Especially those where there is less fighting involved. I can think of one mission on the Breen front where if you don't pick up on one piece of information, you're likely to screw up the first part; or a throwaway diplomatic mission on Bajor which has you looking for flaws in evidence in order to exonerate an accused Cardassian Gul.
Yeah, the game has a few questionable items canon-wise (like the "replica NX" C-Store ship), but there's a very plain affection, knowledge of, and respect for the IP that shines through the game. Anyone who takes a trip to DS9's Ops to look in Sisko's old office will see the evidence of that there.
