Hello everyone... As you may or may not know, Federation ships are, in the latest version of Fleet Ops, no longer all picking from the same big list of names... However, if you look in the odf files, you'll see that the list for each class of ship is identical, so the ships are in effect, all still picking from the same list, leading to bizarre situations where all your Mandrills have dramatic names like "Victory" and "Protege" and so on or a Sabre and a Descent share the same name...
This, to me, is unacceptable... As such, I am starting a project in which I hope to alter the odf files for each class to give each class a unique list of names...
However, often when people try to arrange lists like these, they degenerate into confused messes, with repeated, misplaced and downright stupid names cropping up all over the place, prime examples of which can be seen in an old thread on this forum simply entitled "nitpicking"...
That's where the title of this thread comes in... One useful thing the "nitpicking" thread accomplished was user T-Man's statement that he had always thought of Trek ships as being built in "batches", with each "batch" based around a certain theme... This game me an idea... By dividing up the names for each class into small "batches" (with maybe five to ten ships each, though the exact number would be free to vary), we could make the process far less unwieldy and confusing by grouping all the names of a certain "type" into the same place...
Now, what I need you, my fellow Fleet Ops forumers to do is help me gather the lists of ship names... I will list the names we currently have at the bottom of this post, editing it with new names (and perhaps deleting old ones) periodically... You can either suggest a name that would fit with an already established "theme", or you could suggest an entirely new theme, preferably with at least several names to start it off... You can debate your fellow forumers over certain names, or even entire themes... If you don't like a name or theme, feel free to let me know... Also, if you would like to support someone's call for a specific name or theme or their call to have a specific name or theme moved or removed, feel free to do so as this will lend strength to the original sentiment... Hopefully, over time we'll end up with plenty of names for each class...
With all that in mind, examine the preliminary list below and come out suggesting!

Issue votes:
These are issues regarding the list that I have decided to put to a vote...

Yes: 4

Sovereigns: 1
Excelsior IIs: 0
Other (specifiy): 3
Abstain: 1

in sfc3 i had a miranda class ship with the name "USS Bremen", and i loved it, cause its the name of my hometown
i like the idea
PS: that will be the name of my ship in STO if it ever comes out, and if we're able to name the ships

If your going to do that, you might as well add registries to them. A file on FileFront has registries for several ships (Like the Galaxy, Nebula, Akira, etc.), while the others in the file could be adapted for the other FO ships.

Also, the names of the federation vessels could be also from somewhere else than earth. Examples: U.S.S. Khitomer, U.S.S. Sirius

Sovereign's need names relating to royalty and great leaders.

IMO the "great cities" theme should be for Excelsior II vessels!
Add USS Daystrom and USS Scott to "famous scientists"!
I agree with Tyler on the royality/leader connection regarding the Sovereign class.
Also I'd love to have some Earth-related names that are not just covering the Western hemisphere. (USS Kyoto, USS Cape Town, USS Uluru, USS Sahara, USS Brazil, USS Hakaru,...)
I'd also love a "mythology theme", maybe for the Intrepid class (since there already is an USS Bellerophon. (USS Hermes, USS Amaterasu, USS Shiva, USS Quezacoatl, USS Dryad,...)
Maybe the Defiant class could spot a "famous battlesites" theme? (USS Khitomer, USS Waterloo, USS Pearl Harbor, USS Teutoburg,...)
Oh, and did I mention that I LOVE the idea?

Yeah this is awesome, I'm just trying to think of names as I write this post....
Maybe for some of the more sciencey ships, name them after particles, so say the USS Quark/Boson/Lepton/Meson/Proton/Neutron/Positron Etc, get the idea? Just ask me again if you want more, but just google "standard model" and you should get some. Also either in this batch or the scientist batch we need the USS Higgs, fellow physicists here will know why.

OK, based on what I've read so far, I've decided to do the following...
1: Split the "weapons" category up so that the Steamrunner will retain "siege weapons" (ballista, trebuchet, etc.), while the Sabre will gain the "melee weapons" theme...
2: Add penumbra and unlashed mayhem's suggestions to the "famous scientists" category, along with Galen (for both the Greek physician and the guy in TNG who discovered the genetic puzzle thing), for a total of 12 so far... We could add more (Watt, Joule, Volta and Ohm all come to mind) but if we get too many it might be worth it to make a second "famous scientists" list, maybe for the Remore class...
3: Add fullphaser's "naval warships" category, if only because this "theme" is somewhat canon...
4: Add a "famous engineers" category for the Mediterranean class...
5: Add a "royalty" theme for the Sovereign class, as per Tyler's suggestion.
I am, however, not really sold on Fullphaser's "famous merchants" or "emotions" suggestions, 'nor am I sold on penumbra's "mythology" or "famous battlesites" or Unleashed Mayhem's "particles"... I'll need more people backing these themes before I add them to the list...
I am also considering adding two "place name" categories, one for planets and one for stars, but I'm not sure which classes these should go with...
I also think that the question of wether the "great cities" category should apply to the Sovy or Excelsior II (or indeed some other class) should be put to a vote... So far there's one vote for Excelsior II and I will abstain from the vote...
EDIT: Moved "USS Scott" to the Med's "famous engineers", meaning there are now only 11 in "famous scientists"

As far as I know, Star Trek uses fictional names as well as real (USS Thunderchild, USS Akira?). That could help get more names.
Sovereign Names:
Sovereign Names:
- USS K'mpec, after the longest-living Chancellor in Klingon history.
- USS Gorkon, after the Klingon Chancellor who pursued peace with the Federation (as the Excelsior one will likely be out of service by now)
- USS Martok, I'm sure any Trekkie would know who Chancellor Martok is.

I know, I was already using Thunderchild, Scott (as in Montgomery Scott) and Daystrom (the famous holography guy we never meet)... Akira, however, is actually Japanese for "Brightness"... "Steamrunner", on the other hand...

The Akira Class was named after a Japanese animated film of the same name (hence the fictional bit), and the Streamrunner but Steamrunner was originally Steamrunner but was changed for unknown reasons.

The Steamrunner in theory was named for Fold Zandura - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 's song of the same name but someone in the studio dropped an 'r' for unknown reasons. If that's true and the Appalachia is a standard name, than naming the poor things after mountain ranges is not all to bad an idea. The problem with this is that the second "named" steamrunner has nothing to do with a mountain range at all, in fact it has more to do with an atomic bomb.
That having been said, if we are sticking to that theory than Sabre's should be named after test pilots.
Could also just borrow from this:
United States Navy ships - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I mean lets face it, the names they are using are either going to be related to Star Trek or British / US forces's ships

A lot of Starships are named after foreign people, places, and ships (USS Yamato - named for the Japanese Battleship Yamato).
