i am concerned about security of this tunngle private virtual server, does it mean direct access to the users machine by their real IP address? the reason why i say is because i dont trust anyone in life and suspicious all the time, i just ask incase someone came on fleet ops and started masquerading as a player when really his only interest is hacking your machine.

not a greater threat then the internet is always ^-^

tunngle has a build in firewall. 'critical' ports that could compromise your computer's security are not accessible from that virtual network.

I still check to recruit people on Gamespy, but there's only about 1-2 people on per day as far as I've noticed  . Last time I've seen anyone playing a game there was a few months back - though obviously I might have missed it. Tunngle has a much better system too with the ability to receive sounds, messages, etc.

i ask because its also a good point to advertise if its any good from someone who may ask the question, but even so i wanted to know if its any good. thanks doca.

actually without using upnp u still need to manually forward a port or two to tunngle. i cant use upnp because my router and computer dont work well together.

yes, you are right. i had to manually forward that port too. in most cases this won't be necessary, as most modern routers support upnp. even then, it's still better to forward one single port than to have to forward a whole range of ports. plus tunngle tells you if upnp is not available which is a lot better than armada telling you nothing.

Would FO require port fwding? If so, which ports are more important to fwd?

TCP or UDP to add to that question from l33t

fleet operations requires the same ports as armada 2 does when playing through gamespy or direct internet connections. when tunngle is used, you do not have to configure separate port forwards for fleet operations.

Maybe with the next patch you could advertise playing on tunngle in the flash screens that popup while loading a game.

for tunngle you will need to either use upnp or port forward one UDP port. the tunngle website lists which port it uses. its not dynamic it is the same port every time.

to get fleetops working through tunngle (this wont work for gamespy, that needs other ports lol) you will need to configure your SOFTWARE firewall to open the directplay 8 ports. these are the same connections as for vanilla a2 by the way.

if the dp8 ports arent open u will see games in the lobby but if you try to join you will get "host lost"

the ports are for dp8 are:

6073 TCP both in and out

and the RANGE of ports 2300-2400 UDP in and out.

the bit which was annoying for me is getting my firewall to open a range of ports as it only allowed comma delimited values. ie i had to enter 2300,2301,2302 all the way up to 2400. luckily i found a way to simplify this lol.

for anyone who wants to add these this is the comma delimited values for all those ports:

2300, 2301, 2302, 2303, 2304, 2305, 2306, 2307, 2308, 2309, 2310, 2311, 2312, 2313, 2314, 2315, 2316, 2317, 2318, 2319, 2320, 2321, 2322, 2323, 2324, 2325, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2329, 2330, 2331, 2332, 2333, 2334, 2335, 2336, 2337, 2338, 2339, 2340, 2341, 2342, 2343, 2344, 2345, 2346, 2347, 2348, 2349, 2350, 2351, 2352, 2353, 2354, 2355, 2356, 2357, 2358, 2359, 2360, 2361, 2362, 2363, 2364, 2365, 2366, 2367, 2368, 2369, 2370, 2371, 2372, 2373, 2374, 2375, 2376, 2377, 2378, 2379, 2380, 2381, 2382, 2383, 2384, 2385, 2386, 2387, 2388, 2389, 2390, 2391, 2392, 2393, 2394, 2395, 2396, 2397, 2398, 2399, 2400

or you could specify a rule that opens ALL ports, but only for the one program that needs to use it.

EDIT: i also just figured out that if you allow the armada2.exe file in /data with all ports allowed that it works fine. so i deleted the rule allowing those ports out :D

Tunngle will still need that one port forwarded though.
