is that greek at the start meant to be OPA or VRA or ORA? if the first then OPA!!!

i wonder if they based the klingon chant of qapla on opa.

The Greek letter Omega is sometimes used in place of V, so it's VRA. Omicron is used for O.  :shifty:

figured as much, thanks for clarifying, would have been funnier as OPA :P

omega is still used as O as well, hence opa being omega pi alpha, although i think it now sounds just like omicron does in modern greek, omega transliterates as "great O", omicron tranlisterates as "little O".

my greek friend at college had trouble explaining to me that they use beta for v, and for words with the b sound from the english word book they needed two letters, mu and pi. i doubt they have a lot of words using the b sound, so they probably didn't need a letter to do that job.

also for the hard c in "comm" kappa might be more appropriate than chi as when chi precedes omicron it sounds like ch in german/scottish, or far far too many words in yiddish. that's one of the most difficult sounds to make if you don't speak a language that uses it a lot from birth.

Using Beta for V actually makes more sense then Omega now that I think about it (since the sounds B and V make are similar). Unfortunately many translation charts I've found usually don't include V and I've been told conflicting information about what letters are used for V. I ended up going with Omega since it seemed to be a letter nonspecific to any Roman letters and had multiple uses. I guess it helps that these people in Sigma are long detached from both modern Greek and English...  :sweatdrop:

for the letter V you're fine with whatever you think's right as they don't actually have the letter V.

and the V in VRA is a proper noun anyway i presume, so translating it into any language is lenient.

I'll probably stick with Omega for V then.
