Fleet Ops versus Armada II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to Fleet Operations

Got Armada 2 in the mail, and got a computer that it works on!
Thanks everyone, even though I haven't done anything with FO yet, the computer I got should work for it, it's got a little more than 2GB Ram, 180 Gb Hard Drive, got a video card, desktop, everything seems to be working well.
But yes, I figure I will play it for a while with just A2 to get used to everything.
Is anyone reminded of birth of the federation for this game? I mean, I know they're completely different. Birth of federation is turn based, not real time. But in BOTF you had to keep track of morale, food supply, intelligence, colonies, research, etc, A2 is only metal, dilithium and latinum, but they brought more in with planets and cargo and trading stations and everything.
Was any one else a fan of Birth of federation... I loved it. So many vessels, especially for the federation. and they seemed to keep true to the real thing. Defiant Heavy Escort was such a powerful ship in that game.
One thing I'm finding with the borg... everything is way larger. I like A1 borg better. They have tactical cube, which is good... but fusion cubes are HUUUGE, takes up so much of the playing screen... and you cant toggle around to get a good view of it (haven't been able to yet at least). All their ship yards are just massive things. And the vessels just seem quite dull... except the assimilator. But like forgetting the cube, sphere, and diamond... everything else seems out of sync with borg. Maybe I'm just crazy...
But still having loads of fun!! I'm almost out of federation campaign mode. Wondering what the cardassians are gonna be like...

I liked Birth of the Federation, but kept having to many problems to be worth it. The game had its share of issues.

Technical issues? Or game issues? The structure of the game?
I liked it. I colonized everything. Built a starbase for every colony. The only thing I never really did was play against multiple level 5 AIs. Built every kind of fleet though. I once won the game purely with scout ships (romulan, mediuml map). The main problem was the task force. Limit of nine or something, if I remember correctly. Took such a long time to order 100s of scouts from one system to another. It was insane. And building up a colony takes insanely long. One game could last me days. To the point of being at level 1 industry... upgrading to level 9 or whatever. To actually be able to use a colony of 450 pop, to built shipyards and produce, comparably with homestarsystem... lol. So I see your point. It was a long game. In that sense. Usually gave all my opponents level 3, one level four for a main competitor. I tried multiple level 5s.... got destroyed. Absolutely destroyed. Except once. I cheated. I forget what it was. I put the game on impossible random mode or whatever (This guarantees Borg, lots of them). Borg were very powerful in that game *unless you had a sizable fleet with cloaks. Played the game as romulans. Built 50 Warbirds. Went into the negative credits. Sat them right on Romulus. Anytime a borg cube attacked my warbirds wiped them out. And the borg destroyed everything in the universe except my one system, and I won by default. Galaxy owned by the borg, except for my one system of warbirds in economic ruin to maintain a military. Borg only attack with one cube at a time.
But yeah, I mean the game had crazy possibilities. The other big thing that annoyed me was the morale for everything. After you seized another races planet, all you could get was apathetic population morale. Home planet would be fanatic, mostly everything was like pleased? or something. But yeah, the battle cruisers for the game were great. Kvorts for Klingons. Romulan battle cruiser.
I thought it was a great turn based game... but you had to set the turn to be like 15 min. So that when it got deep enough into the game you had enough time to do everything. The upgrading of colonies was the killer. Just ridiculous. But hey. I found it quite realistic. Was a slow game, but enjoyable.

Issues with the game, mostly. The erratic, unreliable and backstabbing AI is the most common I've seen people complain about. Every AI is the same and have nothing in common with their namesake. Some things make it seem like they rushed it.
Asking for the disk to be put in while the disk is in and trouble starting it isn't unheard of, either.

I play BotF, I throughly enjoy it, it has a mod team not unlike the team here and they developed a mod called Ultimate Dominion. Replacing Ferengi with Dominion, completely overhauled the empires and minor races, new ships, modded personalities, and such. I'd highly recommend it to any fan of Trek or 4x strats.

yeah, i think its really good game overall. a lot of lag with the confrontations when the fleets start to get larger but hey. yeah, i havnt played it at all with any mods. just played it the original version.
on another note, i beat armada 2 campaign! i have come to have a new affection for the borg. there ship yards are gigantic... and i liked the starbase in armada 1 better for borg. but oh well. The tactical cube I'm having fun with assimilating technology. So far, generally equip my cubes with nebula shield disruptor thing, or warbird shield inversion. haha, makes for a very powerful cube. no one can keep there shields up.
the only thing, ive had it where i have tactical cubes with the beam, shield inversion, and other (akira torpedo sometimes), but this really drains the special energy eh? depending if you use high level autonomy for special weapons. sort of drains pretty quickly. Ive been trying it without researching holding beam. Just giving them the choice of either nebula shield disruptor/akira torpedo, or romulan inversion for shields. (or manually doing the weapons myself)
also, as for the fusion cube... its way better having 8 tactical cubes drain the shields of multiple targets, than one super cube... I don't know if I am not seeing this right, obviously fusion cube just rips right through a starbase and such... but I havnt really got into making them that often. ... that and because I like playing against feds and roms in instant action... if I find myself against a few nebulas with shield disruptors of their own, they can lower a fusion cubes shields and AIs always build swarms of galaxys, sovereigns, aegians, and such. so ive had cubes lost to that before. overtake my cube with boarding party. not fun. which is insane considering the 5400 crew on a tactical cube.
again, havn't downloaded this patch. thinking I will in the next couple of days. so i dont what changes... but yeah, this is all just for normal armada 2.
dunno really about cardassians and 8472 add ons... dont really like their special weapons. all the cardy ships look the same generally.
but anyways. good game. maybe ill download this patch thing! get playing it soon

Fleet Ops isn't a patch for A2! It is standalone

Technically speaking its a total conversion but it does have elements of a patch as it has its own executable wrapper with dll hooks into the game. Its certainly not stand alone.
Nit picking over.... back to the thread.

Caps Lock swaps views, and the Galaxy Class is a Warp-In. It's in the Starfleet Command building.

Um, I have a question about the officer promotion thing. So when my ship is ready to become veteran, does it automatically promote itself? or do I do something? im not exactly sure what im doing in this area...
posted on August 30th, 2010, 6:02 pm
Select the ship alone, and it should have a new button to promote it. It won't work if you have multiple selected.
