Chrome as my main with firefox as my backup for when things aren't compatible, just like Dircome does.

Firefox only... well, IE needed for some work related stuff. I did try Chrome, but really don't want to use a browser developed by Google. I mean, IE may be the work of satan, but i'm pretty sure Chrome is constantly reporting everything you do to google even if you set privacy mode.
Opera i haven't tried in years. Been meaning to give it a look. What put me off originally was the adverts you got when using the free version... not sure if this still exists.
On the topic of Firefox starting speeds, on first boot, about 10 seconds. Once loaded its fast. The best thing about firefox is the wide range of add-ons you can get for it. Noscript is very useful, youtube/flash downloader, etc.

i use firefox as my main. and i have ietab addon for sites that dont like firefox. it runs pages in ie, but in a firefox tab.
firefox is only slow on startup, which is its only problem.
i like the speed of chrome, i think chrome is a nice browser. but there are more and better addons for ffx than for chrome.
ffx 4 should greatly improve things too.
i hate ie, i only use it when a web page dont wanna work in ffx.
maybe if ie9 final is really good i might consider using it for graphics intensive pages.

I think I will get it when it gets officially released, but I was just wondering if anyone has tried it and if it is just like IE8 or better (or worse ).
I haven't actually tried it, but it looks like there are some promising things including a download manager. My guess is it will feel like a better IE8.

i think the most promising feature advertised for ie9 is the new graphics capabilities. if the adverts are accurate then firefox 4 will have to be good.

I use Chromium, better build support and bleeding edge. I love the new hardwar acceleration and phew, its FAST. And much more stable than FF or Opera.
For example, I brose on youtube. Every time, I click on a video and want to scroll, I see something like a frame-drop while scrolling. Chromium doesnt do it. It is fast, everywhere, even with 12 tabs open. I dont want to sound like a fanboy, but it is I think the best browser ever.
After that, I use Opera sometimes, followed by FF and Safari, but those two come only in special cases to run. In 90% of the cases, I run Chromium. IE is never touched.

IE is such a stupid browser. Lots of extra work has to go into making html and css compliant with IE.

Wasn't IE the first Internet Browser? If it was, everything after it is just a copy. In my opinion all the new and old Internet browsers are just one thing, companies competing against each other and trying to get more users.
All computers come with an Internet Browser already installed, installing others takes up valuable hard drive space and is thus a waste. Computers have IE installed for a reason after all, its what works best with the operating systems it seems plus when you update your computer, its updated too. No need to do seperate updating. That's a plus in my opinion.

the first web browser was unimaginatively called WorldWideWeb. in 1990.
it was later renamed nexus.
netscape also came before ie.
ie only became dominant when pcs became cheap and microsoft force fed ie to all the computer illiterate people by bundling it with windows. and they were too stupid to get anything else.
now the eu stops microsoft from cheating and they have to provide a version without ie. and give a browser choice screen in the eu.
ie rested on its dominant position for years without change, until other free browsers challenged it.
so not all computers come with ie installed. only windows computers ever came with ie installed anyway.
ie doesnt work, thats its problem, the browser was pathetic, laughable. it was years before they lost so much market share that they actually did some developing of ie and put in features to make ie more than a joke, stuff like tabbed browsing and some actual security features.
other browsers have always been better than ie, so they arent a waste of space. especially since browsers take up very little space anyway.
a lot of new browsers are community things. firefox isnt run by a company trying to make money. there is no adware or purchase price. just something good for all.
EDIT: ie just like netscape was basically a copy pasta of mosaic.
EDIT: ie being awful is evidenced by the fact that since people have become clever with computers, ie's share has fallen from 95% to 60% thats a huge drop. ie has been so crap for so long, that even if ie9 is the first good ie, nobody will switch back.
i have been looking at the ie9 beta, its not bad. hopefully firefox 4 will also have the performance boosts of ie9 beta and remain the better browser.
but i doubt firefox users will switch back to ie, as we feel wronged by ie, we hate it.

Ah, Mosaic... that was on the Sun systems right? CDE?
And Jet - showing how young you are... LOL. Just would like to point out as well, that Mac's don't tend to have IE installed on them (Safari is their default, not sure if there is even a modern version of IE available for OSX) and you have to go to some lengths to get IE running on Linux with Wine and even then only IE6/7 are working (at least last time I checked).
Linux usually comes with Firefox as its default and half a dozen others available on install or straight after. KDE distributions have Konqurer available out of the box (although I'm a Gnome man myself), although it isn't usually the default.

i remember the mac versions of ie, they were even worse than normal ie. im glad they stopped making them lol.
internet explorer for mac does run on osx, its just nobody bothers downloading it as its really really really really old.
loki, i already mentioned that it was only windows pcs that have ie by default (excluding that five year deal where microsoft paid apple to put ie for mac on macs), and that in the eu microsoft were forced to make a version without ie (which never sold a copy cos microsoft didnt advertise it ) and give browser choice screens (actually quite annoying lol) as important updates through windows update.
if someone is smart enough to install/live boot linux then they are smart enough to stay away from ie like the plague.
EDIT: mosaic ran on many os, including windoze

I think IE is created by Windows/Microsoft, there is no other independent site with it and its downloaded right from Windows' website when you want the new version. Plus my browser at the top reads: "Windows Internet Explorer provided by Yahoo" (I have one with the Yahoo Toolbar Pre-installed) all the same Windows Internet Explorer though.
I've never had problems with it but the other browsers I tried didn't work to the way they should and I got more pages not displaying and others missing things. IE has by far been the best.

ie is made by microsoft (windows isnt a company its a brand also owned by microsoft)
and yes u download the latest version from microsoft.
why u mention this i dont know, it doesnt make ie good. ie is still rubbish. microsoft makes money, its a company run for profit. if they could charge for ie they would.
changing the title bar of internet explorer is easier than changing ram.
i could change it to read: "Internet explorer provided by King Leonidas" if i wanted to. most oems will have it set to them. and that silly yahoo toolbar does it too. also i hate toolbars like yahoo toolbar and google toolbar and all those other stupid toolbars that make u have to pay attention during any software installations to avoid installing them.
ie is awful, its had a terrible history with security. its been slow to add new features that all its competition had.
u have it the wrong way round, its ie which has errors and cant display pages, its the better browsers like firefox which can get it right. certain sites still demand ie though, like outlook web access implentations and the windoze xp windows update site needs ie. its disgusting. at least microsoft learned from all the hate mail and made sure the new office web apps work on better browsers.
EDIT: oh yeah, earlier i used outdated figures, ie's usage share is still plummeting and is now at 51% ouch. 95% down to 51%
EDIT: i also found out that firefox 4 will use hardware acceleration like ie9. so there will still be no reason to switch to ie.
but for once ie is actually keeping up with the times and introducing features at reasonable times instead of years later. they arent ahead, but at leas they arent years behind anymore.

I haven't had any errors with IE on any computer I've ever used, alot of other browsers yes, at college they have IE and Firefox, and Firefox has most of the problems with the schools security and the security.
Internet si internet, we all use the programs that work best for us, why argue about the programs? At least IE 8 has one good feature if a tab or the whole thing stops working, it reopens the tab or the page for you and you don't lose the page you were on. A very handy feature.
